The collection consists chiefly of calendars maintained by Michael, invitations to local events and correspondence. The series of calendars include desk calendars, 1969-1986, of appointments and conferences; pocket calendars, 1958-1986, of court dates; and calendar/diaries, 1967-1983, of business, social and speaking engagements. Invitations are chiefly to local business and social engagements. Correspondence pertains to court or community business particularly Michael's efforts to have a U.S. deputy marshal assigned to Charlottesville, Va. There are also letters and memoranda from the Federal Judicial Center and administrative offices of United States courts.

The U.S. Marshals were formed by the Judiciary Act of 1789 in order to give the federal government enforcement power to apprehend fugitives and perform other odd jobs- such as the U.S. census (until 1870). Marshals were permitted to swear in Special Deputies and form posses to apprehend federal fugitives.
